Why Christian Women Should Pursue Islamic Studies

Grace Kim — April 1, 2026

Christian women have a unique and important role to play in outreach to Muslims. Women’s issues are among the most pressing and urgent concerns in Islam, and in many contexts, due to cultural norms and religious dynamics, only women have access to Muslim women’s lives, conversations, and trust. Only women can effectively address these issues and meaningfully advocate for the condition and experiences of Muslim women. This means that without trained, thoughtful, and biblically grounded Christian women, vast numbers of Muslim women remain unreached—not only socially, but also spiritually.

You do not need to become an expert in Islam to serve Muslims. You do not need a PhD to love, listen, and share the gospel. However, knowledge deepens confidence, strengthens credibility, and sharpens our evangelistic approaches. Islamic Studies, when pursued with an evangelical mindset, can equip Christian women to understand the theological, legal, and cultural frameworks that shape how women are treated in Islam and to engage with clarity, compassion, and truth. When a Christian woman understands how the Islamic tradition speaks about God, sin, salvation, and women, she is far better prepared to ask meaningful questions, address real concerns, and point to Christ in ways that resonate. This kind of preparation transforms surface-level exchanges into deep, relational, and spiritually-significant dialogue.

If you are a Christian woman who has a heart to serve Muslims well—or if you know women like this—I encourage you to consider pursuing a degree in Islamic Studies at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. You can pursue focused training through an MA, MDiv, or PhD, and students at Boyce College can also take Islamic Studies courses for credit. Southern Seminary offers nine different courses on Islam, and the program is intentionally designed to equip students, pastors, and missionaries who feel called to serve among Muslims. Students gain a deeper understanding of the diversity of the Muslim world while being trained to engage thoughtfully, live faithfully, and proclaim the gospel both boldly and respectfully.

Here are reflections from current female students in the Islamic Studies program, sharing how this training has shaped their calling and equipped them for ministry:

“Before starting the Islamic Studies program at Southern Seminary, I served in Muslim ministry but lacked a deep understanding of the Islamic worldview. Even in a short time, my grasp of Islamic theology and history has grown significantly. The program uniquely combines academics with active gospel engagement, equipping me well for future ministry.” – Laura

“The Islamic Studies program at Southern Seminary is incredibly practical. It has trained me to ask critical questions about Islam while emphasizing love for Muslims as people in need of the gospel. I am learning to share the truth of Christ with both gentleness and boldness.” – Payton

“Before this program, I did not feel equipped to minister to Muslims or engage their theological questions. Just one-third of the way through, I already feel far more confident and capable of sharing the gospel with them.” – Kristin

(Note: Only the students’ first names are included for security purposes, as they plan to serve overseas.)

Christian women who study Islam step into a long and powerful legacy of gospel witness. Thoughtful engagement, intellectual rigor, and deep spirituality are not mutually exclusive. They are essential together. In a world where Muslim women are often navigating questions of identity, dignity, suffering, and hope, Christian women trained in Islamic Studies are uniquely positioned to embody both truth and grace. They can speak into places of silence, build bridges, and bear witness to the transforming love of Christ in ways no one else can.
